Replacement for Quintana/Willard??

Postby Glenn76 » Sat Mar 13, 2010 12:13 am

The more I think about this the more depressing it is for me to think that Social Distortion really needs to find another solid replacement for their future (and hopefully permanent) drummer. They had Charlie Quintana which as far as I'm concerned was the ultimate perfect drummer for Social D. Style, musical background, attitude, Chalo was the King. He was and still is the best for them out there...... Then comes Atom Willard. He was a great replacement for Charlie and would be runner up for for second place. Atom is a great guy with an awesome reputation and had a great work ethic perfect for Social Distortion. Too bad he just didn't leave Angels and Airwaves for the Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World. He probably is thinking blood is thicker than water since those are his "home boys" from San Diego. Oh, well, it is his loss. Now who could they get that would be a perfect fit for them that is a free agent or they could steal from another group? I wave been racking my brain thinking of who they could possible get that would fit their style, background, image, etc. Scott Churilla from The Supersuckers and Reverend Horton Heat might do, but I don't think that he and Ness would get along that well. Someone with some serious style like The Black Crowes drummer would be nice since that is the musical direction the band has been heading since SL&RR. Any other thoughts or possible good fits?

Cheers!

Scott is a great drummer and his style would fit better than Atoms did in my opinion....
but I hope that there enough good drummers out there that bands I like don't have to cannibalize off each other.
And honestly between Chuck, Charlie and Atom (albeit briefly), over the last decade or so Mike seems to pick really good drummers that sound really good in the band. I am not to worried about it.

And the guy from Fu manchu? I think he's a really good drummer, but I am sure he is just doing them a favor by playing the tour on pretty short notice.

I'm not worried about it either, but to continue the discussion what about Dave Raven? Both Charlie and Brent came after first playing with the Mike Ness band.

Nash - I forgot about him! Now you are talking. Man if he would join full-time and permanent that would be amazing!

He would be great to have, but between the vandals and devo along with all the other studio stuff he does his time would be an issue.

Yes, but Jason is right. Josh is probably way too busy to commit to Social Distortion full-time. But how special would it be to have someine like him. Plus, he played on Ness' Cheating At Solitaire.... He is definitely one of the best out there today. He is featured in almost every drummer magazine.

Now is a good time to delay the album and make the acoustic one until they get a steady drummer.

i'm with Glenn on this one, mr. misfits. Road Zombie is a great instrumental--who cares if there's no words. An acoustic album would be a lot of fun. a new album (acoustic or normal) is fine with me. anything that shows growth.

I don't discount the fact that as far as instrumentals are concerned Road Zombie is decent. However, as we all know how many songs SD has historically put on their albums, I sure as hell don't want one of the 10 or 11 to be an instrumental. Make it a b-side and leave it to a show opener.

Actually, you might be surprised at how interesting an acoustic rework of old stuff could prove to be. The idea sometimes sounds hideous but the reality is often a different beastie altogether.... okay, it might not work on the straight ahead rockers like Nickels And Times, but they have enough of the Prison Bound/Ball and Chain tuneful mid-paced ditties in their back catalogue to warrant the old "unplugged" approach.... Proof of this theory was when I first heard of Jim and William Reid's plans to revisit the majestic glories of the Jesus And Mary Chain's back catalogue and give the sonic howling noisefest the simple acoustic and vocal treatment. I was horrified by the idea of it, until I actually listened to the stripped-down versions of sparkling gems of genius like Taste Of Cindy, and You Trip Me Up with all the whistling screams of feedback removed, and no 60s Shangri-Las drumbeats, and it revealed the simple beautiful pop melodies that lay at the heart of what they were doing. It was a revelation. Who knows, if SxDx have a bash at that, it might prove to be similarly enlightening... (mind you, it won't be a patch on the Mary Chain of course.... how could it? )

I agree. I'd rather hear a brand new, straight-up Social D album before we talk about any of this acoustic stuff.
Also, I wouldn't want Road Zombie on the new album either. Why? - Because we've already heard it. I thought the anticipation for this album was about hearing brand new songs. Hoping for Road Zombie to be on it kind of defeats the purpose, especially considering it's an instrumental. If there was going to be an instrumental on the new album in the first place, wouldn't you rather have a brand NEW one instead?

Just make your own acoustic album there's plenty of bootlegs of them doing the acoustic thing. and you can get road zombie off the black kat site.. it's low bit rate but still..

8-)
I only know three chords but I try to play the crap out of 'em
